What Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer or lipofilling, is a cosmetic and reconstructive procedure that involves taking fat from one area of your body and injecting it into another area to add volume, improve contours, or enhance appearance. The most common donor areas are the abdomen, thighs, or flanks, and the fat is usually transferred to the face, breasts, buttocks, or hands. Fat grafting has become increasingly popular as a natural alternative to synthetic fillers and implants. Unlike dermal fillers, fat grafting uses your own tissue, which reduces the risk of allergic reactions and provides longer-lasting results. It’s commonly used for facial rejuvenation, breast reconstruction after mastectomy, or enhancing body shape with a more natural feel and appearance. The ideal candidate for fat grafting is someone who has enough excess fat for harvesting and wants to enhance a specific area of the body with a subtle, natural look. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with very low body fat or poor circulation in the target area.

How does fat grafting work?

Fat grafting works by harvesting healthy fat cells from one part of your body and reinjecting them into another area that needs volume or correction. The transferred fat must establish a blood supply in the new location to survive. Not all of the fat will “take,” but with proper technique, a significant portion of it integrates into the new tissue, offering lasting results.
